The requirements placed on injection systems are growing constantly. Increased injection pressures, faster injector switching times and flexible alignment of the injection process with the engine operating point make diesel engines resource-efficient and powerful. Compared to conventional injection systems, the main advantage of the common rail system (CRS) for diesel engines launched onto the marked in 1997 can be found in its large variation possibilities concerning both injection pressure and timing. This is achieved by decoupling the pressure build-up (high-pressure pump) from the injection (injectors).
